A Deep Dive Into Media Hegemony

When a certain group or ideology dominates or controls the media, they are able to mould and sway public opinion and discourse. This is known as media hegemony. It is a theory that has its roots in cultural studies, and thinkers like Stuart Hall and Antonio Gramsci are frequently mentioned in connection with it.

By exerting influence over media institutions including television networks, newspapers, radio stations, and online platforms, influential people, businesses, or interest groups can achieve media hegemony. These powerful organisations have the power to sway the information, stories, and viewpoints that the public is exposed to.

Media hegemony has a variety of negative repercussions. First, it can establish the agenda by deciding which topics are emphasised or disregarded.
